Pandemonium and Soliloquy

Long time, no blog, bad advertising.

Today in a random clothing store chain window, saw a poster of a guy wearing an outfit from the store. Sort of a conservative, somewhat bland but not entirely unpleasant looking jumper of sorts. The caption read:
"If he loves you, he'll wear whatever you give him."
The ad seemed oddly happy to insinuate the apparent unpopularity of the clothing. What the?

  • HELLOTE! Long time no blog for both of us!

Lmao @ that story. OK i've got a similar story u may have seen on TV.

I'm referring to the recent "Godfreys" ads (the vacuum cleaners). The ad is for their "Half-Price Weekend" where the ad continuously states "1000 vacuum cleaners will be sold at half price!"

Then the whack-head-on-table bit of the ad. The man we can only assume is Mr. Godfrey tells us quite honestly:
"Now to be fair, not every vacuum cleaner is half price."

Now if I know ads, I know that if they ever make a "now to be fair" claim, it's because they're setting themselves up to make an even better claim. What's it going to be? One might expect the next statement to be:
"BECAUSE THE OTHERS ARE 75% OFF" or something awesome like that.

But no, the voice-over just happily adds, "Yeah but 1000 vacuum cleaners are at half price."

O..kay... you didn't need to waste the extra 12 seconds just to emphasise the fact that it's not a total sale...

And yes, I do admire Andrew's ability to articulate his thoughts within a relatively short space of writing.

  • I'm going to take the somewhat annoying but always relevant line of: "The ad is there to provoke thought and discussion...".
In other words, if you've spent time thinking about it you've spent time on the ad. Taking the axiom that time = money then you've given the store, uh, money.
Lets call it Corporate Art, the art of lucrative hypnosis.
